Precious son of Julie Kolmer and Bill Gibson, older brother of Liam, endearing grandson to Doris and Bob Kolmer and Helen and William Gibson. Missed by his uncles, aunts and cousins, neighbourhood and school friends and his Winterhawks hockey team.
It is with shattered hearts that we share the passing of our beloved son, Zachary, at the young age of 14 and a half. With courage and a stoic spirit beyond measure, Zach battled brain cancer for 6 months. He passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by Mom, Dad and Liam and held in their loving arms.
Unfortunately, Zach was no stranger to cancer. Diagnosed at 7 years old with leukaemia, he conquered this dreadful disease after just over 2 years. This experience inspired him and his 2 classmates to enter a national science competition. Their hard work paid off earning them 2nd place for their invention called, ‘The ER Assistant’, a win that flew them and their families to Washington D.C. to celebrate and accept a prestigious award.
Zach was also a dedicated and respectful hockey player with the Milton Winterhawks, defending the ice with skill and determination. His love for this sport extended beyond playing - he took joy in taping and retaping his sticks, collecting hockey cards and attending hockey games as a spectator.
Zach will be remembered for his sweet, kind, easygoing, calm and humble nature, his love of fast cars and anything on two wheels. He was often seen speeding up and down the street on his scooter or dirt bike or jumping ramps at the indoor BMX track.
We will miss his beautiful smile, endearing shyness and most of all, his big bear hugs.
Forever in our hearts, our sweet boy.
We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the amazing staff at Sick Kids and Emily's House Hospice for their exemplary care. Special mention goes to RN Gurjit Sangha and Dr. Malik for their unwavering support of Zach and our family during Zach's end-of-life journey.
Family and friends are invited to gather on Friday, December 5, 2025 from 4 – 8 p.m. at Bay Gardens Funeral Home, 1010 Botanical Dr., Burlington. A private service and burial will be held at a later time.
In honor of Zachary's memory and in lieu of flowers, please donate to Pediatric Oncology Group of Ontario, Childhood Cancer Canada Foundation or Sick Kids (Garron Family Cancer Centre). A future fundraiser in his name will be held at a later date in conjunction with the Milton Winterhawks to raise funds for pediatric cancer research. No child should lose their childhood to cancer. Family and friends are encouraged to share online memories and tributes.
In Memoriam A.H.H.
I hold it true, whate’er befall;
I feel it when I sorrow most;
‘Tis better to have loved and lost
Than never to have loved at all.
